schema - forms editor: designer tab overview

  • Updated

The Designer tab is the workspace where admins translate the data model of the selected Object into a clear, usable interface for end users. Within this tab, admins control all visual layout and structural aspects of the form.

This includes defining the form’s name and description, organizing fields across the canvas, deciding how many pages the form contains, and configuring how each field is displayed.

While the Designer tab works directly with fields from the Data workspace, it does not modify the data model itself; it only controls presentation and behavior at the form level.

All layout changes are made directly on the canvas. Fields can be added, removed, rearranged, or adjusted visually. The Designer tab also supports undo and redo actions, allowing admins to safely refine the layout before saving. Once the desired structure is complete, saving the form preserves all visual and architectural changes.

designer tab dashboard

The Designer tab is composed of two main areas that work together to build the form:

1. Toolbox
2. Designer Canvas:

  • Picture Form button.
  • Pages.
  • Title fields.
  • Description fields.
  • Fields.

5 STEPS

1. The Designer tab is where you build and structure the form layout.

This tab is composed of two main areas that work together as you design the form.

2. On the left, the Toolbox contains the available components you can add to the form.

3. On the right, the Designer Canvas shows the form layout as you build it.

4. The canvas is organized into pages, where you can add and arrange content.

Within each page, you can configure title fields and description fields, and place fields in the order you want them to appear.

5. That's it. You're done.

Next step

The Toolbox provides access to available fields, while the Designer Canvas is where the Form is visually assembled.

toolbox

The Toolbox displays all fields available to the form based on the selected Object.

Each field shown in the Toolbox originates from the Object’s configuration in the Data workspace. Field types, limitations, and base behavior are defined in Data and reflected here.

Within the Designer tab, the Toolbox serves a visual and functional role, allowing admins to build the form by dragging fields onto the canvas or adding them with a click.

The Toolbox does not create new fields. It displays only the fields that already exist and are supported by the Object selected for the form.

designer canvas

The Designer Canvas is the main visual workspace where the form is built.

This is where admins define the form’s layout, structure, and flow. Fields added from the Toolbox appear on the canvas and can be arranged to match the intended user experience. The canvas reflects the final structure of the form as users will encounter it.

picture form button

The picture form button allows admins to add a banner image to the top of the form.

This banner appears as a visual header and can be used for branding, contextual information, or visual identification. Adding or removing the banner affects only the appearance of the form and does not impact the data collected.

pages

Forms can be divided into multiple pages, similar to a physical or multi-step digital form.

The Pages feature allows admins to define how many pages the form contains and which fields belong to each page. This helps organize large forms, improve readability, and guide users through information in logical sections.

Fields can be moved between pages as needed, allowing the form flow to be adjusted without changing the underlying data.

title fields

Title fields are used to define titles within the form. They can be applied at different levels, such as:

  • The overall form.
  • Individual pages.
  • Sections within the form.

Titles help structure the form visually and provide context to users as they move through different sections.

description fields

Description fields are text-based fields designed to display longer explanatory content. These fields are commonly used to:

  • Provide instructions.
  • Add contextual information.
  • Explain what users are expected to enter.

Description fields support larger texts and are purely informational. They do not store user input.

Fields

Fields are the forms’ core components and represent the data points users interact with.

All fields in a form are created from the Field tab of the Object in the Data workspace. Their data type, base behavior, and limitations are defined there. In the Designer tab, admins control how these fields appear and behave within the Form.

In addition, fields can be:

  • Moved to different positions.
  • Removed from the form.
  • Minimized for easier layout management.

These actions affect only the form layout and do not modify the field definition in Data.

The Designer tab is fully dependent on the Object and Field configuration defined in the Data workspace. To understand how field behavior is defined, see the Field Tab article in the Data workspace documentation.
